History

The Gem Shop began in 1971 as a cottage industry in the basement of our owner, Eugene Mueller.  Gene developed an interest in rocks as a young boy while visiting his grandfather in Minnesota.  This interest grew into lapidary skill over the years.  While teaching art at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee,  he saw the need of the art metal students for polished stones.  He began cutting agates and jaspers to fill this need.

Circa 1908
As demand increased, The Gem Shop was officially born.   Soon the growing inventory of rough rock threatened to sink his house deep into the ground.  With the encouragement of his wife, Gene moved his business to its own home in the Brewery Works building on the east side of Cedar Creek in Cedarburg.   In 1980 the business was incorporated and moved to its present location on Washington Avenue in the Cedarburg Historic District.   The Gem Shop, Inc. has continued to grow and now has the largest inventory of rough rock in the Midwest -- over 100,000 lbs!

About TGS, Inc.

The Gem Shop is a true lapidary dealing with everything from the mining of fine agates and jaspers to the cutting of unique designer cabochons.  Our rock yard and basement are filled with tons of different types of rock for every lapidary need.  We are a dealer for several lapidary equipment manufacturers (Lortone, Raytech, Diamond Pacific, Graves) and usually have used equipment for sale.                                  Rock Lover's paradise
Our world-wide contacts and number of years in business (36) have allowed us to gain a vast knowledge of the world gem and lapidary markets.   If you are looking for any particular rock, email us and we will try to get it for you, or we will try to send you in the right direction.
Inside our shop, the jewelry maker can find a wide assortment of stone, and metal beads, findings, leather cord and chain.  For the collector, we cut and polish fine agate and jasper specimens.  We also offer the mineral collector a variety of minerals from all over the world.
great stuff!

To make a unique piece of jewelry, select one of our colored gemstones or cabochons and look through one of our findings source catalogs to select a setting.  You may then go to one of our local metal smiths for assembly or even for a custom made mounting.  For gift ideas, we have a wide variety of items made from rock, including bookends, wind chimes, carvings, spheres, geodes, jewelry, polished agate slices, fossils, lamps, and more.

All of us at The Gem Shop welcome your personal visit.  Come and dig in the rock yard, which has tons of various types of rock in barrels and bins.  When the snow obscures the rock yard, our basement remains open with its boxes and bins full of rock.  Spend the day and have lunch at one of fine local restaurants.   See the links below for information.

It's a big one!

Come and see our rock yard with the 8000 lb Arizona petrified wood log.  This petrified wood was collected in 1910 from the Petrified Wood Forest area in Arizona before it was designated as a national park.  This specimen stands about 6 feet tall.  Bring your camera and take a picture.
We also arrange tours for clubs and groups interested in the lapidary arts.   See the Visit The Gem Shop section below for directions, store hours, and related links.
