Mining for Ocean Jasper®

These photos show the mining activity on the northwest
coast of Madagascar near the village of Marovato,
in the district of Ambolobozo.

 Mining area
Miners surveying the area to determine
the location of the best rock.

They have supervisors in Madagascar, too!
All work done by hand with hammers, picks,
and bare feet!

Watch those toes!
Splitting rock with a sledge hammer.

Ooo...that's a big one!
Large boulder of Ocean Jasper

Pile of rock on the beach
Pile of Ocean Jasper waiting to be
sacked and loaded on the boat.

Will it float?
Miner with sack of rock wading through shallow water
to load the boat. The next high tide will allow
the boat to sail to the port.

Hurry up! I'm tired of holding the boat up!
The boat rests on a sand bar at low tide. If the boat sinks
when the tide comes up, they'll know it's overloaded!
